Stephen Sondike, MD, to head up Adolescent Medicine at Akron Children's

Stephen Sondike, MD, joined Akron Children’s as director of Adolescent Medicine on Sept. 1.

Dr. Sondike replaces Dr. James Fitzgibbon, who has held the director position since 1980. Dr. Fitzgibbon will continue to see patients in Akron Children’s Adolescent Medicine Clinic.

Most recently, Dr. Sondike was section head of Adolescent Medicine at the West Virginia University Physicians of Charleston. He also served as medical director of the WVU Disordered Eating Center of Charleston and director of the university’s adolescent cardiovascular program.

Following medical school at the State University of New York in Brooklyn, Dr. Sondike completed his pediatrics residency, as well as his fellowship in adolescent medicine, at the Schneider (now Cohen) Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park, NY.

Eating disorders in adolescents and teens, and pediatric and adolescent obesity are among Dr. Sondike’s special areas of interest and scholarship.

He resides in Jackson Township with his wife, Jenny, and children.

Akron Children's Division of Adolescent Medicine provides primary care medical services for preteens and teens, including physicals and preventive services, dermatologic care, school concerns, substance abuse, eating disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, routine gynecologic care, and contraceptive services.
