Dr. Jewell named director of psychiatry and psychology at Akron Children’s

09-19-2018 (Akron, Ohio)

Steven Jewell, M.D., has joined Akron Children’s as director of pediatric psychiatry and psychology.

Dr. Jewell replaces the previous director, Dr. Stephen Cosby, who retired in June. He will also hold the Lois C. Orr Chair in Pediatric Psychiatry, which was established to support the advancement of patient care, research and education programs by providing funding that allows physicians to explore new and innovative treatments in the field of behavioral health.

Most recently, Dr. Jewell served as the vice president and medical director at Child Guidance & Family Solutions in Akron, where he worked since 2005. He also has been a member of the medical staff in psychiatry at Akron Children’s since 2007. At Northeastern Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), he has been a professor of psychiatry since 2006 and in 2010 was named the associate training director of the NEOMED Child Psychiatry Fellowship.

Prior to his career in Akron, Dr. Jewell held a variety of positions in child psychiatry in the Pittsburgh area. He holds a bachelor’s degree in medicine from Northwestern University in Chicago and earned his medical degree from the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He completed his internship in pediatrics at Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital for Children in St. Louis, Missouri; his fellowship in child psychiatry at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago; and his residency in general psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh.

Patient care, professional education and advocacy are among Dr. Jewell’s special areas of interest and scholarship. He provides advocacy on behalf of families raising children with severe mental illness as a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, for which he previously served on the Ohio board of trustees. He also provides advocacy on behalf of practicing psychiatrists through his involvement with the American Association of Community Psychiatrists (past board member) and the Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Association (past president).

Dr. Jewell, a Richfield resident, and his wife are the parents of a daughter and two sons and grandparents of three boys.

Akron Children's department of pediatric psychiatry and psychology specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of emotional or behavioral disorders affecting children, teens and their families.
