Akron Children’s Hospital presents “Protecting Your Children: Advice from Child Molesters”

09-13-2018 (Akron, Ohio )

The Akron Children’s Hospital Division of Child Protection and Child Abuse Prevention is hosting a free presentation called “Protecting Your Children: Advice from Child Molesters.” The event – for parents, educators and community members – is being held Monday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Akron Children’s Hospital Considine Auditorium, 215 W. Bowery St.

Keynote speaker is Cory Jewell Jensen, currently the senior trainer for CBI Consulting. She has spent the last 35 years providing evaluation and treatment services to adult sex offenders and their families in Portland, Oregon. In addition to her clinical work, Jensen has provided training and consultation services to the National Center for the Prosecution of Child Abuse, National Child Advocacy Center, National Children’s Alliance, U.S. Marshal’s Office, NYPD Special Victims Unit and a number of law enforcement, child advocacy and faith-based organizations. She has published numerous articles related to sex offender treatment, risk management and child abuse prevention, testified as an expert witness in local and federal courts, and been a featured guest on radio talk shows and “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Topics at the Oct. 8 event will include:

  • Extent of the problem – who the offenders are and why they molest children.
  • Common seduction or “grooming” tactics used by offenders.
  • Problems associated with traditional prevention programs.
  • Talking to children about abuse and people with “secret touching problems.”
  • Practical child and family “rules” for safety.
  • Responding to sex-abuse disclosures and reporting child abuse.
  • Addressing the growing number of offenders living in our community.

Due to the graphic content of this presentation, the program sponsors strongly recommend that children and teens not attend. The presentation incorporates videotaped interviews with convicted sex offenders and graphic discussions about sexual crimes. Participants with a personal history of abuse are encouraged to have support people available following the presentation.

Registration for this event is not required. Attendees should park in the Akron Children’s Hospital P1 Bowery deck at 199 W. Bowery St.
