Akron Children’s Hospital appoints new chief medical information officer

Dr. Sarah Rush has been appointed Akron Children’s Hospital’s new chief medical information officer (CMIO).

Dr. Rush, who joined the hospital in 2013 as a pediatric oncologist specializing in the treatment of children with brain and spinal cord tumors, has been an active member of the hospital’s Physician Informatics group since 2016.

In her new position, Dr. Rush will oversee Akron Children’s clinical information systems and assist clinicians in the delivery of patient care. She will work closely with the hospital’s medical staff, administration and information technology department on Akron Children’s electronic medical records (EMR) system.

A native of Norwalk, Ohio, Dr. Rush received her bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University in University Heights. She earned her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at Akron Children’s Hospital. Following residency, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, for a hematology/oncology fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She completed a fellowship in pediatric neuro-oncology at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Denver and remained on faculty as an assistant professor following her fellowship.

In 2013, Dr. Rush returned to Northeast Ohio area to develop the Neuro-oncology and Targeted Therapies program at Akron Children’s Hospital. In collaboration with other providers at the hospital, she developed a comprehensive clinic for the care of patients with brain and spinal cord tumors. In her new position she will continue to see patients in a limited role.

Dr. Rush lives in Hudson with her husband, William, and daughter, Rachel.
