Amy Rousell with Akron Children’s President and CEO Chris Gessner
Every month, Akron Children’s recognizes an employee for providing an excellent patient experience. Our most recent honoree is Amy Rousell, technician from the Environmental Services department. She recently received this feedback from a thankful parent:
“My son had his yearly oncology visit today. He is cancer-free, but the visit brings a lot of stress and anxiety to our family. He just got lab work done when we entered the elevator. We were greeted by an employee, Amy Rousell, who paid so much attention to my son and made him feel special. She was so kind and sweet. When we got to the third floor, she took us to the cafeteria. She bought my son whatever he wanted; this moment was so special to me. A random stranger, doting on my child, and making our day brighter.
“She explained she just started this job a few short months ago and recently lost her mom – and the patients bring her so much joy. Amy is someone who restores people’s faith in humanity. She is truly special and needs to be recognized. I was crying afterward, because as a parent, an encounter like that is something you won’t forget. She used her own money to brighten my child’s day. I am so grateful for this hospital and the people who make it special.”
How long have you worked at Akron Children’s?
I started working here June 30, 2025.
What’s a typical day like for you in terms of your job duties?
I try to make my duty list as easy as possible, although there are days we are all so busy! You learn to manage.
What do you like best about your job?
I like the children, most importantly. But the employees at the hospital are wonderful to work with.
When you encountered this patient family, what made you want to escort them to the cafeteria?
If I’m not mistaken, I offered to take them to the cafeteria. I was heading there anyway, so it worked out well.
What motivated you to also buy the child some food?
By any means, I really wanted to make him happy.
What does family-centered care mean to you?
Family-centered care means a lot, especially if I can be of help to a family. Help doesn’t cost anything. It’s something we must all do. Being kind and helpful are the things that God wants us to do. So genuinely, I’m like that at heart. I’m helpful and kind to as many people as God sends me.
