Katie Allen
Akron Children’s recognized 3 social workers for their commitment to patients, families and their profession.
Katie Allen received the Mary Frances Ahern Award for Social Work Dedication; Salima “Sam” Dunn was honored with the Denis Hessoun Award for Professional Growth and Development; and Amanda “Mandi” Ramsey earned the Vicki Allan Award for Social Work Services.
Each award highlights a different aspect of excellence in social work – but all 3 recipients share a deep commitment to improving the lives of the patients and families they serve.
Mandi Ramsey: Vicki Allan Award for Social Work Services
As part of the Population Health team, Mandi consistently provides unwavering support of both colleagues and families navigating complex social and medical needs.
Colleagues describe her as a go-to resource for addressing social determinants of health – from helping families secure housing and utilities to navigating school systems, individualized education plans (IEPs) and wraparound services.
Over the past year, Mandi has played a key role in care coordination, often stepping in to guide team members through unfamiliar or complex situations. Her ability to clearly explain processes helps families better understand and access the support they need.
“She makes you feel comfortable coming alongside a patient to meet those needs,” one nominator shared.

Mandi Ramsey
Mandi’s impact extends beyond day-to-day patient care. She has helped families access financial assistance through various programs, contributed to successful care coordination outcomes and taken on leadership responsibilities when needed – facilitating case reviews and supporting team decision-making.
She also leads an annual adopt-a-family holiday initiative, helping ensure children in need experience the joy of the season.
Colleagues say her leadership, compassion and knowledge make her an invaluable asset. “It is an honor and a privilege to work alongside her,” a peer wrote.
Sam Dunn: Denis Hessoun Award for Professional Growth and Development
Sam’s passion for professional development is evident in every aspect of her work. Known for her curiosity and initiative, she consistently seeks opportunities to expand her knowledge and improve patient care.
Whether asking thoughtful questions, collaborating with colleagues or sharing newly discovered resources, Sam approaches each day with a commitment to learning – not just for herself, but for her entire team.
She has pursued extensive education related to her work in the Burn Institute, earning certification as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional and completing specialized training in trauma-informed care and substance use treatment.
In 2025, Sam earned her Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) credential and has since taken the next step by enrolling in a doctoral program in social work. Her long-term goal is to conduct research that will benefit burn patients.
Beyond her role at the hospital, Sam serves as Region 2 director for the Ohio National Association of Social Workers (NASW), where she advocates for the profession and encourages others to pursue ongoing growth.
“She is a stellar example of the importance of continuing to seek growth opportunities,” one colleague noted.

Katie Allen: Mary Francis Ahern Award
Katie’s journey with Akron Children’s began as an intern in 2019. From the start, she demonstrated initiative and dedication.
During her internship, she helped shape what would become the ambulatory and intake social worker role in the Mahoning Valley, later stepping into the position full time. She built systems and processes that had not previously existed, laying a strong foundation for the role.
In 2022, Katie transitioned to the Special Care Nursery (SCN), where she now serves as a central support for staff, families and community partners. She played an important role in implementing Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) screenings and postpartum support initiatives, while also collaborating closely with Children Services and infant-focused agencies.
Colleagues describe Katie as calm, resilient and consistently positive – someone who brings reassurance in challenging situations.
She is also deeply engaged across the organization, contributing to initiatives such as Cordata, the SWIPE Committee, NICU Reunion and Touched by Nathan fundraisers. In addition, she mentors social work interns each year, helping guide the next generation of professionals.
“Katie is the hub of the SCN,” one nominator wrote, noting her ability to connect teams and support families with compassion and clarity.
A shared commitment to excellence
While their roles and areas of focus differ, Katie, Mandi and Sam each demonstrate the impact of social work through advocacy, collaboration and a deep commitment to those they serve.
Their colleagues agree: The organization – and the profession as a whole – is stronger because of their work.
