From staff nurse to educator, Denise Saraniti has worn many hats since joining Akron Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in 1981.
She also embraced the dual roles of proud mother and collaborator when her daughter, Krista, joined Akron Children’s as a child life specialist. Their close relationship sparked greater awareness and interdepartmental collaboration. “I realized there was a need among our NICU population for our older babies and also for sibling support,” said Denise. “Some of our babies are here for more than a year, and they can get behind developmentally.” With this insight, Denise and Krista implemented a child life pilot program in the NICU from 2019 to 2021.
As Denise moves into the next stage of life, her story is a testament to the power of compassionate care and the profound impact a nurse’s touch leaves on the tiniest patients and the families who love them.

What brought you to Akron Children’s? Who gave you your start?
I was in nursing school at Kent State University in 1981 with my friend, Kathy. We were looking for a nursing technician job for the summer, and Akron Children’s had one. Eileen Enin, the NICU supervisor, hired both of us – and I never left. Kathy also retired from the NICU!
Have you always worked in the same department and role?
I have always worked in the NICU. Since 1981, my roles have included staff nurse on every shift, clinical coordinator, interim nurse manager and educator.
What have your biggest contributions been while here?
I helped open the new NICUs here at the main campus and those throughout the community. I also enjoy watching the advancement of nurses I’ve oriented.

Denise generously shared decades of wisdom with her NICU colleagues.
How has Akron Children’s changed since you started?
Technology has improved dramatically. Premature infants who did not survive 40+ years ago now do much better thanks to smaller equipment and advances in medicine and technology.
What gave you the most satisfaction at work?
I keep in touch with some of my primary patients who are now 40! All of the little babies and their families touch you in some way.
Do you have any advice for employees just starting at Akron Children’s?
Keep smiling and go with the flow because things are always changing. Look for the best in the changes and especially in all people, both the new and old.
What do you look forward to the most in retirement?
Visiting grandkids more frequently and staying close with all my friends and family. Also, relaxing and completing all the tasks that have been ignored!
