At Akron Children’s, our Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) do far more than care for patients—they lead, mentor and advocate for the health and well-being of their colleagues. As 2024 wrapped up, our APPs made a significant contribution to Akron Physician Wellness Initiative (APWI) through the Medical Staff Fund, recognizing the importance of mental health resources for health care providers.
“Typically, we allocate funds to provide small gifts to our APPs during APP Week,” shared Laura Abels, advanced practice education coordinator. “But with the growing mental health crisis in the U.S. and burnout rates at an all-time high, we realized we could make a more meaningful impact by supporting the longevity of the APWI program. Around 30-50% of APPs report burnout, according to our Well-Being Index data, so it’s critical to address burnout proactively and provide resources when it occurs.”

APPs that attended the annual meeting and Advanced Practice Provider celebration, presented a donation check to APWI.
The APWI offers no-cost mental health services to Akron Children’s medical staff, including therapy, psychiatry and wellness support. The program recently added a third therapist, further expanding access. Survey data highlights its value: nearly 60% of clients said the program’s cost-free model was a key benefit, and 47% reported they wouldn’t have sought care without APWI.
APWI Usage Highlights (2024):
- 415 patients have completed intake since inception
- 218 patients are currently active in treatment: 45 psychiatry-only; 38 combined psychiatry and psychology; 135 psychology-only
- 3% of appointments are telehealth
- APPs represent 22% of all intakes, underscoring the importance of this resource.
“APPs are integral to our health care teams, providing acute and primary care while mentoring, educating and advancing the field of practice,” said Jenny Michel, director of the Advanced Practice Center. “This donation reinforces our commitment to supporting the people who support everyone else. It reflects Akron Children’s motto, ‘More Than a Job,’ and recognizes that taking care of each other is vital to our collective success.”
By prioritizing mental health, Akron Children’s APPs are setting an example of care and compassion, ensuring their colleagues have the tools to thrive in their careers and personal lives.
