Remember to take frequent breaks and stay hydrated to help keep cool while wearing a mask outdoors.
As you step outside to enjoy the summer sun, don’t forget to pack your sunscreen, hat, water and face covering or mask. That’s right; masks are now a go-to tool to keep each other safe – not from the sun, but from the COVID-19 virus.
The CDC continues to recommend wearing face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. As beaches, parks and walking trails become busier, knowing how to keep cool in a mask will help make wearing one comfortable even as temperatures get warmer.
Material
- Use a face covering made of lightweight, breathable material or 100% cotton fabric. Synthetic materials can make masks hotter and harder to breathe through.
- Choose light-colored fabrics since dark colors draw the sun towards you.
Duration
- Limit how long you wear a face covering outside. Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated so you don’t overheat.
- Replace a mask if it becomes sweaty or damp. Having extra, clean masks available when you’re on-the-go or at home makes switching out a mask easy.
Fit
- Make sure your mask fits securely over your nose and mouth, but isn’t too tight that it makes breathing a challenge.
- Face coverings with adjustable ties may offer a more comfortable and contoured fit, which can also help reduce the desire to touch or fidget with a mask while wearing it.
