In January, Hannah Miller, RN, (fourth from left) spoke at the NEO Year of the Nurse kickoff event at Case Western Reserve University. Hannah, who is a nurse in the PICU, spoke of her experiences being a new nurse.
When the World Health Organization (WHO) declared 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife, they did so to celebrate what would have been the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. At the time they had no idea the COVID-19 pandemic would be sweeping the globe in early 2020, and that celebrating the nurses caring for the world’s sickest patients would become an international rally cry.
Through yon2020neo.com, a group of northeastern Ohio universities and colleges, health care providers, hospital systems and nursing professional organizations are highlighting the innovative and inspiring nurses in this region.
Nancy Mosca, who heads up Akron Children’s efforts on the Year of the Nurse committee, says Akron Children’s has been fortunate to share many of our nurses’ stories on the NEO website to date, and we continue to add stories every month.
“From our nursing leaders like Lisa Aurilio, COO, and Chris Young, CNO, to Megan Dorrington who heads our ASCEND nursing diversity and nurse residency programs, the website features both written stories and videos that are meant to share personal narratives and inspiring stories about what nursing means to each of them,” said Nancy.
Although some of the region’s celebratory and educational events were canceled due to COVID-19, Hannah Miller, a PICU nurse and 2019 nursing school graduate, spoke at the January kickoff event about what it was like to be a new nurse.
“I was asked by Nancy to participate in a panel that consisted of a nurse from an academic setting, a nursing student and nurses from varying degrees of experience in the field,” she said. “Each shared a bit of advice on setting goals, overcoming challenges, greatest achievements and how things have progressed and changed during their nursing careers.”
Some of the themes for future months include nursing history, nursing in the digital world, and research, science and innovation.
