Carrie Litten grew up swimming and diving, and about 10 years ago she set out to complete a triathlon. The only problem was she hated running.
“I downloaded the Couch Potato to 5K app to get myself started,” Carrie said. “I completed a sprint triathlon that year and ran my first 5K. Then I accidently signed up for a 5 mile race, but I surprised myself and finished. After that I caught the running bug and just kept increasing my race distance.”
Now she’s looking to complete her sixth or seventh full marathon when she runs in the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon, Half Marathon & Team Relay presented by FirstEnergy this September.
“I love the community involvement, running through the neighborhoods is always so energizing,” Carrie said. “You are never alone and you feel supported and encouraged through the whole course.”
In addition to the community support for the race, Carrie is a pediatric nurse practitioner in Akron Children’s emergency department and loves the connection between the hospital and the Akron Marathon. That connection is part of the reason why she signed up to be a Children’s Champion runner this year.
“I love knowing that I am able to use my hobby to support our patients and families,” Carrie said. “It’s so fun to be on the course and see the kids out there giving high fives. I also love seeing co-workers on the course or at the finish.”
Carrie said that she’s privileged to witness and be part of the compassion and care provided to patients and families every day at Akron Children’s. She added that she’s fundraising for Akron Children’s because she believes in the hospital’s promise to treat every child as we would our own.
“People ask me often why I drive from Cleveland to Akron 4-5 times a week for work. It’s because I believe everyone within the organization also believes in this promise,” Carrie said.
