Although the Timken Foundation Building Akron Children’s Health Center, North Canton has been open to patients since May 21, the hospital celebrated its newest location with the broader community on Saturday, June 22.
Community members, government officials and employees attended an open house to get a first-hand look at the new space located at 6076 Whipple Ave., NW in North Canton.
Staff and volunteers welcomed visitors as they toured the 3-story, 36,000-plus square foot space that brings pediatric services from the hospital’s 4 Stark County locations under one roof. The event’s ribbon-cutting ceremony featured remarks from the hospital’s President and CEO Grace Wakulchik, staff Chaplain, and the Detweiler family from North Canton whose boys are both patients at Akron Children’s.
The new center, which has already seen more than 2,800 patients since it opened, offers rehabilitation services – physical, occupational and speech therapy – primary care and specialty services, including allergy/immunology, cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, orthopedics, physiatry, pulmonology, sports medicine, urology and vision for babies, kids and teens.
To help showcase the new space, a scavenger hunt path led visitors through the building and ended with a prize and an opportunity to have fun in a photo booth. Families also enjoyed festive cookies and entertainment from “Mr. Zap,” who delighted young and old with bubble tricks, and a magician, who amazed guests with clever routines.
