Dr. Lisa Sammon joins our team in Center for Allergy and Immunology.
Dr. Lisa Sammon likens her role as Akron Children’s newest pediatric allergist/immunologist to a detective. She spends her days solving mysteries by exploring how environmental factors, such as pollen, certain foods or animal dander, influence a child’s immune system. To her, it’s fulfilling work because each time she closes a case, a child’s quality of life improves. In fact, it’s the sole reason she decided to become a doctor.
What emoji do you use the most?
The smile emoji. A positive attitude is everything.
Why did you want to become a doctor?
I decided to become a doctor to help others reach their full health potential in life. In particular, being an allergist and immunologist is fascinating because it allows me to explore how environmental factors (i.e. pollen, animals, foods, etc.) can influence the immune system and directly impact a child’s quality of life.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
I would love to live in Switzerland. I visited the country once for a medical conference and was blown away by the breathtaking scenery.
What did you eat for breakfast? If nothing, what’s your favorite breakfast?
Eating a healthy breakfast with protein is incredibly important. Time permitting, my favorite breakfast includes scrambled eggs and avocado toast with orange juice.
What piece of advice did someone give you when you were young that still resonates with you today?
Always surround yourself with good people who want the best for you.
Where did you grow up?
Dublin, Ohio

Dr. Martorano and her husband, Brian, at Horseshoe Bend Canyon in Page, Arizona.
What did you want to be (profession) when you were little?
I always wanted to be a doctor. As a child, I found the field of medicine to be fascinating and was fortunate to have caring doctors who were excellent role models. When I reached my teens, I had to have a spinal fusion for scoliosis. From that experience, I learned how much physicians could make a positive difference in the lives of their patients. I am grateful for the opportunity to pay it forward and serve others.
What’s your favorite food? Who makes it best?
I love hot pizza. Late Night Slice in Columbus is excellent.
Do you have any hidden talents or something people may not know about you?
In my spare time, I enjoy landscape painting with oil paints.

An oil painting featuring the South of France by Dr. Martorano
Why did you choose to come to Akron Children’s?
I chose to come to Akron Children’s Hospital due to its reputation for providing excellent care to pediatric patients and the strong sense of community among staff.
