Recently, families with babies in the Akron Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Akron General got a surprise when the dark and soothing atmosphere gave way to cart after cart of brightly colored gift bags. The bags were a donation from the students at Saint Francis de Sales School in Coventry Township.
The group, led by the efforts of Michelle Andes, brought over 100 bags filled with snacks, books parents could read to their children, homemade knitted caps and other goodies. The bags will bring comfort and make things a little easier for families during their time in the NICU. And there were even more bags waiting to be delivered to the Akron Children’s Hospital NICU at a later date.
Madelyn Andes, Michelle’s daughter, was the inspiration for the donation after her stay in the NICU last year. And when Madelyn returned to the NICU during the delivery she was just shy of her first birthday.
Michelle said the donations came about because of her desire to give back after Madelyn’s time in the NICU and to help other families.
The items that went into the bags were collected by the students at Saint Francis de Sales School during Catholic Schools Week at the end of January and then the 7th graders put the bags together for delivery.
Thank you to all the students and families who helped with this donation!
