12-year-old Malia doesn’t let spina bifida slow her down.
For weeks before foot and ankle surgery, 12-year-old Malia Marinos talked a lot about the color of her cast. “She was thrilled when they had neon green,” said her mom, Karen. Little did they know, the doctor had an idea to make the cast even more special for Malia.
Karen recounts that after surgery Dr. Kerwyn Jones came out to talk with them, showed Malia’s x-rays and then said, “Wait till you see her cast – we did it up.”
And he was right.

Dr. Jones surprised Malia by making a bow on her cast.
“When Marty and I went back to recovery and saw the cast we couldn’t believe how adorable it was!” Karen shared. “When Malia first saw her cast she loved it. It was a total surprise. Even the nurses and therapist were raving about the bow.”
Malia has spina bifida which causes her left foot to turn in. In surgery (distal tibia / fibula osteotomy), Dr. Jones rotated the bones in her foot about 25 degrees to make them straight. A plate with 4 screws holds it in place now so she will get around easier.
“Dr. Jones is amazing – so friendly and caring!” Karen said.
