Building a Culture of Research: Meri Rosen

Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute presents the educational program, Building a Culture of Research.

Presenter: Meri Rosen, Ph.D., NEOMED

Presentation: Hearing loss and stress during development: Auditory deficits and neural correlates

Summary: In children, chronic ear infection (otitis media) can induce lasting problems with speech perception. In these children, a heightened risk of long-term language deficits arises from early-life stress, but the underlying mechanisms of these deficits are unknown. My research in an animal model reveals that stress on its own changes the auditory cortex, and the combination of hearing loss and stress induces perceptual deficits far worse than either alone.
