Akron Children’s Hospital Community Outreach in Boardman provides safety and support services for children and families throughout the Mahoning Valley. Our goal is to help keep children healthy and safe so all they have to worry about is just being a kid.
Each year we adopt a school and donate school supplies, hygiene products and offer educational programming throughout the year.
As the Mahoning County site for the Ohio Buckles Buckeyes program, we provide CPS education and car seats to income-eligible families, as well as offer seat checks and installations by nationally certified CPS technicians.
To reduce unintentional childhood injuries, we offer educational programs to families and community members, and provide safety products at a reduced cost. Working with our Government Relations team, we help advocate for effective laws that impact child safety.
As a member of the national program to foster early literacy skills as part of pediatric primary care, our pediatric offices offer new, age-appropriate books to children 6 months to 5 years old during well visits.
We work with local health and social service agencies, police and fire departments to promote and implement strategies to prevent childhood injuries through community awareness, education and public policy changes.
Safe Sitter classes are offered to teach future babysitters ages 11-13 years about safe practices in child care, first aid and rescue skills. Cost is $30.
We advocate for safe sleep practices and, in collaboration with community agencies, provide portable cribs at discounted rates to high-risk families to help reduce infant mortality.
We also offer Teen Outreach, career awareness programs, and health and safety fairs.
