Transitioning Children From Help Me Grow to Preschool

Transitioning from Help Me Grow to Preschool

For the family of a young child with special educational needs, the transition from the Help Me Grow (HMG) program to a special education preschool classroom in their local school district may elicit mixed emotions, from the uncertainty of change to the excitement of going to school.

As a child approaches his third birthday, these concerns are addressed during a Transition Planning Conference. In addition to the dialogue between parents and staff, schools are asked to provide a copy of Whose IDEA is This?: A Resource Guide for Parents. This guide addresses many of the issues surrounding the transition.

Through funds provided by the Ohio Department of Education, Office of Early Learning and School Readiness, the Family Child Learning Center has also developed six information sheets to help families understand how the schools participate in transition and make decisions about eligibility for preschool special education services. These sheets are based on the Ohio Department of Education Procedures and Guidance document (October 2011).

The individual sheets can be downloaded below.
