Attentive, caring staff and Doggie Brigade combine for special ER visit

My 12-year-old autistic son has been suffering from dizziness and loss of vision. Because of a prior experience with my other son at Akron Children's, I was confident he would have a good experience as well, though he was initially terrified due to mistreatment at another hospital.

Upon arrival at the ER we were immediately greeted with a smile and quickly placed in a room. At a very fast pace, nurses, the doctors and other staff frequented our room.

The doctor, whom we had never met before, was amazing. He had an excellent bed side manner, was thorough and genuinely concerned about my son.

He made my son very comfortable by joking and laughing with him. The nurses were just as fantastic and their promptness was so very much appreciated. My son was quickly and accurately diagnosed and we were soon on our way home.

Maddie-Schwartz Maddie, a Black Labrador Retriever, joined the Doggie Brigade in 2010.

While we were waiting, Bernie and Maddie Schwartz (therapy dog) came to pay us a visit. My son lit up like it was Christmas!

Bernie was so wonderful. He and Maddie stayed with us until the nurse came back and kept us quite entertained.

The whole experience was fantastic to say the least and has changed my son's fear and anxiety of hospitals. I cannot say thank you enough.

I feel the entire staff during our visit deserves special recognition. However, Bernie and Maddie Schwartz really went above and beyond assisting. Not only did they keep us company and entertained, they made such a huge impact on my son that there are people that care enough to selflessly volunteer their time for the care and concern of strangers.

My son Dakota hasn't been as cheerful and happy as he is today in a very long time. I truly feel I owe that thank you to Bernie and Maddie.
