As you firm up holiday plans for December, be sure to leave Monday, Dec. 1, open to attend the 20th Annual Project Ed Bear Gala Auction at Quaker Station to benefit cancer patients at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Project Ed Bear is a volunteer organization with a mission to provide comfort to children suffering from cancer throughout northeast Ohio. With 98 percent of their work benefiting Akron Children’s – both in Akron and Boardman – the gala is an important fundraising event for the group and the hospital.

“Project Ed Bear is more than just a teddy bear. It’s a friend that travels with these kids through diagnosis, treatment, recovery and beyond,d thanks to Project Ed Bear Camp and scholarship funds,” said Dr. Jeffrey Hord, director of Akron Children’s Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders. “We are extremely grateful for the support Project Ed Bear brings to our patients throughout their cancer journey.”

Project Ed Bear donated funds to pay for the Bear Cave playroom in Children's outpatient hematology-oncology clinic. Project Ed Bear donated funds to pay for the Bear Cave playroom in Children's hematology-oncology clinic.

At the gala, a host of unique items will be on display for guests to bid on through silent and live auctions. The main attraction of the evening will be the celebration of 30 children who will be honored for their strength and courage as recipients of the Outstanding Bravery Award.

Proceeds from the gala auction will benefit Akron Children’s, specifically Camp Ed Bear.

The camp, designed for oncology and hematology patients at Akron Children’s Hospital, is held every June at Camp Carl in Ravenna. Here, kids are treated to 3 days of memorable fun that includes swimming, a zip line, horseback riding, games and more.

Funded by Project Ed Bear, the camp is run by Akron Children’s staff.
