Fourteen years ago I had an emergency c-section for my twin boys. One passed away and the other weighed only 1 pound, 10 oz. He was taken to Akron Children's Hospital in need of bowel surgery. He had a blood clot in his left leg, pulmonary stenosis and perforation in the bowel. The doctors told us he wouldn't make it through the surgery because he was so small and very unstable. They waited a week then did the surgery. The surgeon was shocked he had made it through with all the bowel secretions in his system. A week after the surgery, another perforation in the bowel occurred. They went back in for the surgery and gave him a temporary colostomy. An orthopedic doctor continued to monitor his left leg which they thought they would have to amputate. Our son fought through all the obstacles. The blood started to flow through his left leg again, but he lost all his toes on that foot, his growth plates were affected, and he has had many corrective surgeries on that foot.
After 3 bowel surgeries and 2 1/2 months at Akron Children's, he was sent home with no monitors. He then had an angioplasty on his artery and multiple surgeries on the left leg. Even though the doctors told us he would probably be blind, a slow learner, and have other issues, our son has beat all the odds. He is with his correct class, with no special classes, he is legally blind in one eye, still has his left leg, and a lasting heart murmur. He will be at Akron Children's Hospital June 8 to have a leg lengthening procedure done. I have left out many details on our story, but this gives you an idea of what our miracle has overcome and he is still a very social and outgoing young man! Please pray for his upcoming major surgery and recovery.
