I'll forever sing Akron Children's praises

Connor and his mom, ErinAkron Children's was beyond amazing from the moment we walked through the ER doors until now.

My 10-year-old son Connor has had a concerning amount of bruising the last couple months while playing tackle football. Last week he had a dental cleaning and they said there was an abnormal amount of bleeding.

I called our family doctor, who ordered blood work done at our local hospital lab. Within an hour he called and said my sons platelets were at 5,000. Normal should be 200,000-400,000.

My husband and I have never been so scared. I feared the worst..... You know.... The C word.

I packed a quick bag and we drove an hour north to Akron. The ER staff was amazing and immediately brought a sense of calmness to my frayed nerves.

They ran several blood tests and kept my son laughing each time they came in and out of the room. Connor really loved the TV with his choice of several movies to watch.

Once it was decided we were going to be admitted, the ER nurse, whose name I can't remember, gave him a Lego set to build. She won his heart. He loves Legos!

Once in our room on the hematology-oncology floor one of the first people we met was Margo. We loved Margo. She explained everything that was going on in words Connor and I could understand.

She does a pretty mean whiteboard drawing of blood cells and platelets too.

It was the middle of the night when we were admitted. They started his IVIG treatment throughout the night and when we awoke in the morning we met the most amazing and cheerful nurse. Amy was so awesome. She danced with Connor and was so attentive to his every need.

Connor loved all the fun stuff to do. A sweet lady rolled a small oven into his room and he made homemade sugar cookies right in bed.

A little while later a soft plush dog was given to him. He said he didn't want to leave.

ConnorHe loved the room service and the menu was awesome with its never ending choices. Connor also loved the game room and we played pool, which was a nice distraction.

Connor Ohl3Later in the evening - 24 hours after we walked in - we were discharged. We were sent home with very clear instructions and the reassurance to call if we need anything in regards to Connors ITP diagnosis, bleeding disorder in which the immune system destroys platelets.

Our first night home Connor spiked a fever and a severe headache. I called Akron Children's and they were right on with perfect advice. They called our local hospital to give them a heads up we were coming and what they wanted done.

A couple hours later Connor was sleeping comfortably in his own bed with his side effects managed. Later that afternoon Akron Children's called and said they had already called the hospital and gotten all the updates.

You all are amazing....making us feel so comforted and well taken care of. I will forever sing your praises!
