College students take a deep dive into concussion research, treatment

My Neurological Disorders and Diseases class at Thiel College, located in Greenville, PA, is learning about concussions and our class visit to Akron Children's Hospital's Sports Medicine Center on Feb. 3 helped deliver the information.

As a senior pursuing a career in the medical field, I found the talk by Dr. Joseph Congeni and his team extremely beneficial.

Our group learned about different symptoms, precursors, and debunked some of the current myths about concussions. I definitely gained valuable information from the lecture, specifically in the diagnostic care of the injury.

Previously, I did not realize that only 1 out of the 22 symptoms had to be present to be diagnosed as a concussion.

This information made me rethink back to my days as an athlete and of the possible concussions that went misdiagnosed because of lack of this information.

It was also very interesting to learn about the new technologies being used to diagnose and treat a concussion. It will be very interesting to see how these new technologies help advance the field - in both the diagnosis and treatment of concussion.

Following Dr. Congeni's presentation, we took a tour of the sports medicine facility, including patient rooms and the physical therapy rooms Akron Children's has available for those suffering with a concussion and other sports-related injuries.

Our group wishes to extend a thank you to Dr. Congeni and Akron Children's sports medicine team for providing us with a very informative presentation.
