It's not always easy to tell when a child is in pain, but years of training and experience have made the anesthesiologists at Akron Children's experts in recognizing the symptoms and managing pain in even the littlest patients.

Recently, 5 of our anesthesiologists put that training and expertise to work to earn board certification in pediatric anesthesiology. Drs. Ibrahim Farid, Ross Agnor, Bradley Riemenschneider, Nancy O'Dell and Andrew Meyer were among the first in the world to voluntarily sit for the examination.

Pediatric anesthesiology has never required a board certification, but recently, mandates have been changing. Within the next 3 years, all anesthesiologists who care for children in large pediatric institutions will be required to have board certification.

"It was very hard," said Dr. Farid, chair of pediatric anesthesiology and pain medicine. "It has been years since we sat for boards and this time we had a full clinical schedule to balance with our studies."

Dr. Agnor said that the certification will increase the quality of care for patients.

"I gained a lot of knowledge during the process," he said. "I was very relieved and proud to have passed. This is a great accomplishment for us, the kids and the hospital."

Many attending doctors do not believe they need board certification once they have established a career. Dr. Farid disagrees.

"I learned an incredible amount while studying and believe that having this certification will help continue to increase standards," he said.

Dr. Farid said that all of the hospital's anesthesiologists will go through the certification process. The team performed about 15,000 pediatric anesthetic procedures in 2013.

"If there wasn't a scheduling need to cover surgeries, the entire anesthesia team would have sat for the boards," Dr. Farid said. "I'm very proud of my team. They have stepped up to the plate. I really take pride in being the leader of a great group of doctors."
