Three Thankful Hearts

I have a hard time saying thank you sometimes. It’s not that I’m not thankful for things, and it’s not that I have a hard time accepting things (mostly). There are just times when I feel like saying thank you is not anywhere near enough.

Those are the same times when I know that I can never do anything to repay someone for what he or she has given me. The entire existence of Rebekah is one of those impossible-to-say-thank-you times.

It’s not often that I have trouble putting my thoughts into words, but for the past few weeks I’ve been really struggling with what to write about our most recent visit to Akron. It just seems like we didn’t do enough – like we can never do enough — to say thank you. And it’s hard to write about without still feeling that way.

We knew we were going for Bekah’s NICU Follow-up, so we planned to stop by the places that mean so much to us, just to say hi, and thank you. For the weeks leading up to Bekah’s appointment I struggled with how to say thank you best. What could we do, or take, to show even a sliver of our appreciation to the people who saved our daughter’s life?

Well, it came down to the fact that we could never do enough, or give enough, to say thank you, so we just gave up on trying that and made some chocolate-covered pretzels. I even made Bekah help a little. She shook most of the ribbons to make sure that they sparkled just right.

We ended up making 360 pretzels by the time we were finished, and we packed them in little bags with two pretzels each. We split them up with our best guess for how many people would be working in the Heart Center, the NICU and the PICU that day, and packed up. As we packed pretzels, stroller, diaper bag, cooler, and Bekah into the car early that morning I really didn’t know what to expect from the day ahead.

But, I did know that we were returning to Akron Children’s Hospital with three thankful hearts.
