First, I would like to start by saying that it is hard to choose just one story because all of my experiences at Akron Children's Hospital have been exceptional.
I have 3 children, and all of them have visited Akron Children's Hospital at one time or another. I have also been a patient in the maternal fetal medicine department with all 4 of my pregnancies for prenatal and genetic testing.
It was at your hospital that I was diagnosed with a missed miscarriage when I was 12 weeks pregant. The ultrasound technician and physician handled themselves with the utmost compassion and professionalism which helped ease the pain of a tragic situation.
When my first daughter was 2 she suffered a very frightening injury at a restaurant. She had her finger shut in the hinge side of an industrial steel door. We knew that she needed immediate medical care because her finger had been severely lacerated and we later discovered it was also broken.
We immediately drove her to the closest hospital where my daughter waited for over two hours to be treated, only to be told that we needed to take her to Akron Children's Hospital because the on call orthopedic surgeon (the injury took place after business hours) would not treat her because of her age and injury.
So after almost three hours from when the accident took place, we took my scared, tired, and injured 2-year-old daughter to Akron Children's ER where they had been expecting her arrival.
She was seen immediately by the doctor who promptly began to treat her injury. After some stitches and a cast we were on our way home.
I am happy to report that my daughter is now 5 and thanks to the amazing work of her doctor, she has no evidence of the injury. Her nail has grown back perfectly, the bone has healed and there is not even a scar.
We will always be indebted to the wonderful ER orthopedic doctor that took such good care of our little girl. We have always wanted to find the ER doctor who treated her and tell him the successful outcome of her story and what a wonderful job he did.
A million thanks to Akron Children's Hospital! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share our story.
