Scrappers honor families affected by childhood cancer

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers helped kick off National Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Awareness Month with some special treatment for cancer survivors during the 4th Annual Kid's Hematology/Oncology Awareness Celebration on Aug. 23.

More than 15 patient families participated and received game tickets and food vouchers. Before the game, the families walked onto the field and lined up on the third base line to participate in a balloon send off. Then, Mark Morgan, a 12 year-old from Girard, threw the ceremonial first pitch.

"It is so nice to see the patients and families outside the hospital setting enjoying the day," said Shari Harmon, clinical coordinator for Akron Children's center for childhood cancer and blood disorders in Boardman. "This is a day for them to enjoy each other's company and a fun afternoon at the ballpark, and we thank the Scrappers organization for making this day so special for our patients and their families."

To recognize National Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Awareness Month, Akron Children's center for childhood cancer and blood disorders will celebrate a different theme each week in September: sports week, beach week, movie week, and game week. We invite our families to stop by our Beeghly campus and join in the fun.

Go for the gold

Also this year, Akron Children's, the Scrappers and Go4TheGoal Foundation have teamed up for the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer Campaign.

For this campaign, the public is encouraged to support the center for childhood cancer and blood disorders by purchasing gold shoelaces for $5 each. The proceeds will benefit infants, children, teens and young adults battling cancer in the Mahoning Valley.

Gold shoelaces can be purchased throughout September at Akron Children's Beeghly campus, Building A, Suite 1210, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
