I am a nurse practitioner in the Haslinger Pediatric Palliative Care Center at Akron Children’s Hospital. Dr. Sarah Friebert, our director, and I have been invited as expert speakers at a conference called “Innovations in Pediatric Palliative Care” in Seoul, South Korea. A colleague of ours, Erin Whipple, a child life specialist at MetroHealth Medical Center, will also be faculty at the conference.
We are very excited for the opportunity to teach, and certainly learn from, professionals practicing pediatric palliative care in Korea. I will be sharing updates and photos from our trip, which will take place over the next 10 days.
The main conference begins Saturday, Nov. 26, but Dr. Friebert and I will be participating in several speaking engagements before that, as well as some cultural events, such as performances of Korean dance and music.
The conference compares pediatric palliative care in the U.S. to pediatric palliative care in Korea, and we will be speaking alongside Korean professionals, with each of us describing our role in pediatric palliative care by our discipline (nurse practitioner, physician, child life specialist).
The other talks are to smaller groups of professionals in pediatric palliative care, as well as hospital administrators at Severance Hospital in Seoul.
Severance Hospital is part of the Yonsei University Health System, one of the largest medical facilities in Korea with over 3,000 beds, and the largest Joint Commission International certified hospital in the world. Our translator during our visit will be Ae Ran Hwang, a pediatric palliative care professional who is organizing the conference. We first met her when she came to observe our program in 2010.
Please look for my posts and photos coming soon. Until then, Annyonghi kyesayo (good-bye in Korean)!
