An estimated 1 out of 33 babies born in the U.S. has a birth defect. And, while there's still some mystery surrounding the causes of birth defects, women can take several steps to ensure the health of their babies, including taking folic acid and multivitamins, exercising and eating well, and updating their immunizations, to name a few.
In recognition of January as National Birth Defects Prevention month, Akron Children's Hospital genetic counselor Connie Motter discusses common types and causes, as well as risk factors and tips to prevent birth defects in this Children's Channel video.
