An early arrival with a happy ending

Change Bandit Sarah McCully's son, Isaiah, has been a patient at Akron Children's Hospital since he was a newborn.  Read how Akron Children's has made a difference in their lives.

Isaiah was born five weeks early on March 5, 2009. He was born very rapidly, and his umbilical cord snapped at birth causing him to lose almost 70 percent of his blood. The doctors had told us that a blood transfusion would be given, and everything should be fine.

Unfortunately, after the blood transfusion, Isaiah's blood counts continued to be a little off, and his hemoglobin kept dropping. Isaiah's liver enzymes were also high. Isaiah was transferred from his birth hospital to Akron Children's Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He was there for four weeks. He was seen by various doctors and specialists during his stay, but ultimately came home undiagnosed.

Isaiah continued to see Dr. Donna Patton from Akron Children's Hematology Dept. on a regular basis, as well as Dr. John Fyda, a pediatric gastroenterologist at the hospital. These doctors were wonderful with Isaiah and worked relentlessly to figure out the cause of his issues.

On Jan. 14 2010, Isaiah had a bone marrow biopsy. He was just 10 months old. Isaiah was diagnosed with an extremely rare bone marrow disorder called CDA Type 2. With periodic observation and blood level checks, Isaiah is expected to live a very normal, fully functional life.

We continue to see Dr. Patton and the entire staff of Akron Children's Hospital's Hematology Department at least twice a year. I am so thankful to all of them. They not only diagnosed and helped treat my son, but they make you feel calm, at ease and reassured every time you step into the office.

They are always upbeat, kind and happy, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that, not only during the very difficult times, but the normal times as well. They feel like part of the family, and I thank them!
