A few weeks ago Dr. Vande Kappelle called to tell us that someone would be getting in touch with us to schedule a consultation for Bekah’s heart surgery. He explained that we would meet with one or both surgeons (Dr. Smith and Dr. Spector) and plan a time for the operation, and that the operation would probably be a few weeks after the consultation.
During the hour drive to Akron, we checked and rechecked our list of questions for the surgeon. We wanted to know all of the percentages, predictions, and best guesses, even though we knew that none of them would change anything. Bekah needs open heart surgery.
I entered the Considine Building at Akron Children’s Hospital with a sense of calm I hadn’t expected. I’m not sure how nervous I planned to be, but instead of being afraid, I was almost relieved. After this we would know for sure, or as sure as things like this can be, when surgery would take place and it would be one less thing to worry about.
We met with Dr. Smith who very kindly went over what is wrong in Bekah’s heart, what will happen before, during and after surgery, and what we should expect. Without us asking, Dr. Smith answered our list of questions about statistics and predicted outcomes.
Not only were we reassured that he is an outstanding surgeon (we already knew that, I’ve been researching him for months), but we were happy to find that he is incredibly thoughtful, even in the way he explained what will take place.
We walked out of the consultation feeling reassured that in just a short time, Bekah’s heart will be in the most capable of hands.
