Akron Children's treated my Cassidy as their own

59-001 Cassidy is now 5

We took Cassidy to her pediatrician for her 2-year annual check-up. At this point the doctor heard a heart murmur and sent us to Akron Children's Hospital to have some additional tests done and meet with a cardiologist.

After several tests, the results showed she had Patent Ductus Arteriosus, aka PDA, and that out of all heart conditions, this was the best case scenario.

Still, as first-time parents we were scared to death. We all just assume we will have healthy, happy, perfect children and when something is slightly off, it becomes one of the most terrifying moments of parenthood.

The staff at Akron Children's was beyond comforting and assuring.

The day they took our little 2-year-old Cassidy by the hand and led her away in to the operating room to perform a heart cath to place a coil around the valve was by far the most difficult moment of parenthood so far. As much as we wanted to protect her and make her better, we couldn't.

But the overwhelming peace we had placing her precious soul in to the hands of the Akron Children's staff was simply because they are amazing people who treated my child as their own.

And it was the simple things that put our mind at ease. Like presenting her with a Build-a-Bear in the waiting room, and the anesthesiologist bringing out a box of items she would encounter during the process and letting her touch them and become familiar with them, and giving her a handmade, cozy quilt as she recovered in her bed.

All of these little gestures are what makes Akron Children's Hospital amazing.
