Akron Children's PICU became a home away from home

Our little miracle, Savannah, or as she would come to be known as Savvy G, was born last July weighing a mere 1 lb., 2 oz. She spent the first 109 days of her life in a Canton hospital NICU.

She went home on oxygen and with a feeding tube and things went well for 2-1/2 months.

On Jan. 19, she aspirated fluid into her lungs and we took her to Akron Children's Hospital. By that night she was intubated per the wisdom and guidance of the PICU staff.

Our admission turned into a 4-month stay exactly to the date. Savannah underwent 3 OR procedures, including a tracheostomy, g-tube, feeding tube, nissen, and a central line IV.

She was sedated and paralyzed to give her body the rest it needed to recover on several occasions. I've completely lost count of the number of medications that have taken up residence in my baby girl's body to help her heal.

After going home from her initial stay, we had been back for 2 more admissions in the PICU. With all that said, I couldn't think of anywhere else I would want to take my baby girl in this circumstance. The knowledge and experience of the ENTIRE staff in the PICU is always above and beyond my expectations.

They want the best for Savannah and treat her as if she was their own. That's why we say the PICU is Savvy's Home Away From Home. She has spent more of her life (thus far) here in Akron Children's PICU than her actual home. Savannah is doing well and we are happy to be home!
