Music to our ears

On Oct. 14 and 15, 115 music therapists and music therapy students attended the State Music Therapy Conference entitled “Music Therapy:  Connecting, Empowering, Energizing” here at Akron Children’s Hospital.

The opening session with keynote speaker Christopher Wilkins took place in Akron Children's impressive Emily Cooper Welty Expressive Therapy Center.  Maestro Wilkins is the conductor of the Akron Symphony Orchestra.

He spoke to the group on the way music connects, empowers and energizes individuals and how today’s orchestras are actively seeking ways to involve their audiences, not simply present music to them.

Maestro Wilkins discussed the need to educate today’s audiences about the significance music has in enriching our human experience and the power of using it therapeutically.  The message rang loud and clear for the audience of music therapy professionals and students.

The conference included many breakout educational sessions as well as two 5-hour continuing education sessions, a drum circle, business meeting and lunch.

It was exciting to be able to highlight our new Expressive Therapy Center (the first of its kind) to so many individuals in the music therapy profession.  Their enthusiasm was palpable!
