Giant Eagle Spotlight: Kent senior excited for the future

Senior Ryan Anderson’s football dreams were sidelined his junior year when his knee started to hurt. When he discovered there was a tumor in his knee, Akron Children’s Hospital was there to help him with his battle.

He was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, but it didn’t stop him from rooting his teammates on at Kent Roosevelt High or from enjoying the events of senior year. After undergoing several rounds of chemotherapy, doctors removed six inches of his femur and replaced them by a rod.

Ryan was 17 when he was diagnosed with cancer, but the now 18-year-old said if he had to choose where he would have went, he would definitely pick Akron Children’s.

“Everyone at Akron Children’s is great,” he said. “My time was the best that it could be, even though I was going through a tough time. The staff tried to make the situation the best they could.”

To thank the hospital, Ryan will be participating in a campaign at 26 Giant Eagle stores throughout Stark, Summit, Medina and Portage Counties from May 31 - June 28. The proceeds will benefit Akron Children’s  Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders. Shop at your local Giant Eagle store and tell your cashier you would like to donate $1.

“When I had the opportunity to use my story to help Akron Children’s, I jumped on it,” he said. “I’d like to help in any way I can.”

Ryan is excited about attending college, and next year, he plans to go to Bowling Green University to major in business.
