A special gift for my only child – one of my kidneys

Josie and mom, Jean Josie and me

I went into premature labor on Saturday, April 17, 2008 – while maternity clothes shopping for the first time.

I was told my only child would likely enter this world by night fall – at only 27 weeks into my only pregnancy. She didn’t.

Almost 2 weeks later, Josephine “Josie” Greco was born via an emergency C-section at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown. She should not have survived her traumatic birth. But, she did.

On her 7th day of life, Josie and I were transferred to the NICU at Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron. Upon our arrival and being greeted by Dr. Butler, a neonatologist, he and his staff worked with Dr. Imam, a nephrologist.

I was told they needed 6 hours to turn Josie’s life around as she was in acute kidney failure. And, they did.

However, I was also told Josie would endure at least one kidney transplant in her lifetime. A goal was set for Josie to never endure dialysis prior to transplant.

She needed to be at least a year old and weigh 22 pounds in order to qualify for a kidney transplant. She was just 2 pounds at the time.

josie-and-mom-2Josie finally met the criteria and was scheduled for a kidney transplant in October of 2009 and again in September of 2010. But these dates came and went because Josie turned the corner and was able to thrive using her own little native kidneys.

But things changed and, once again, we were scheduled for her first kidney transplant on May 7, 2013.  This time, the date was moved ahead to April 30, 2013.  And, on Josie’s 5th birthday, I gave my left kidney to my only child.

In the weeks since transplant, we’re at Akron Children’s 3 to 4 times a week. But we hope to soon only visit 1 to 2 times a week.

In the meantime, we see a long list of physicians, including Drs.  Shefali Mahesh, James Prebis and Larry Patterson, Nephrology; Dr. Micah Baird, Physiatry; Dr. Ibrahim Haddad, Gastroenterology; Dr. Kerwyn Jones, Orthopedics; and Dr. John Crow, Surgery.
