Christine Loomis, Respiratory, Akron Children's Mahoning Valley
“While I never expected it to work out this way, I see Akron Children’s Hospital from both sides of the patient care experience,” said Christine Loomis, a respiratory therapist at the hospital's Beeghly campus.
As a mother, she has depended upon Akron Children’s for the treatment and ongoing care of her 8-year-old daughter, Payton.
A serious bout of RSV damaged Payton’s lungs when she was a toddler, which led to asthma. As a registered respiratory therapist at Children’s, Chris is no stranger to pulmonary disorders, and she's grateful for the care Payton has received by Dr. Starla Martinez at the Akron campus.
Currently, Payton’s asthma is well-controlled, and her team is hopeful she will outgrow it, since there's no family history.
“Doing what I do for a living is a big help, but you know what? Even if I weren’t a respiratory therapist, I feel strongly that the way Children’s approaches patient care would help give me the knowledge and confidence to be totally involved in decisions about her care,” Loomis said.
She especially values Akron Children's family-centered approach.
"Because our families are involved in decision-making, we get to help educate parents about treatments, so they are part of the process in helping get their kids home, said Loomis. "It’s a great feeling. Plus, many of our patient families have actually become special friends.”
Another perk that Christine enjoys at Akron Children’s is the team concept.
We truly work as a team here. With the physician as the lead, we are all involved. We respect everyone’s input and opinion, and we work together for our patients and with our families. It’s really special.”
Akron Children’s Hospital is launching the “My Promise. My Children’s.” employee campaign to raise money in support of the hospital’s $200 million “Building on the Promise” campus expansion project. As part of the campaign, several employees have stepped forward to share their own experiences at Akron Children’s as a parent and a colleague.
