Art show supports different kind of healing

On June 29, 6-year-old Emerson Schmidt smiled widely as she presented a $250 check to Theresa Borodkin, RN, BSN, CPON, a nurse manager for Akron Children's Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Emerson is the daughter of Tessa Schmidt, employment manager at Akron Children’s, and Tom Schmidt, who works in Information Services. This spring, Emerson's kindergarten class at Hillcrest Elementary School in Revere hosted an art show entitled “Palace of Art."

Parents could purchase their children’s artwork, which included handwritten descriptions of the materials used in the pieces.

“Telling people about my art was my favorite part of the project,” said Emerson.

Tessa Schmidt said the teachers wanted the students to give back to the community, and one of Emerson’s classmates decided the class should donate to Akron Children’s. The kids picked the oncology department to help fund whatever was needed for the patients.

“It’s a nice idea,” said Emerson. “It’s giving the doctors money, and the doctors will buy medicine for the kids who are sick.”

Healing comes in many different ways, and Borodkin said the funds will be used to buy toys, games and DVDs for cancer patients to use while they are in the hospital.

“It always amazes and humbles me when we get donations, especially from children who are not patients at Akron Children’s,” said Theresa. “To see youth helping others in the hospital is refreshing, and is truly a blessing.  No matter what the age, people have compassion for our patients, and they want to help.”
