When diabetes takes life on a detour

It was the summer of 2006 when our life took a detour. My husband and I have 3 boys and are always on the go. We didn't see all the signs that were there.

Justin, who was 8 years old, was losing weight, drinking like crazy and waking up wet. When I took him to the pediatrician she diagnosed him quickly with diabetes. She took me in another room and closed the door. I knew our life would never be the same.

We got home from the hospital the night before the first day of 2nd grade. I went to school with him and stayed there.

Eventually, we figured out how to fit diabetes into our life and somehow managed to not let it slow us down. We even survived the 8th grade field trip to DC.

Justin is a happy, healthy 15 year old. He plays soccer for Medina High School and Pennine United Soccer Club. He does well in school and has lots of friends. He has enjoyed all 6 diabetes summer camps so far and stays in touch with those he has met there.

I have witnessed such growth in my son's character as he develops self discipline and responsibility. If I can pass on any tips to you that have helped throughout elementary, middle, and high school I would be glad to share.

I want to encourage other families affected by this disease that even though diabetes has to be a part of your life, it can be managed.
