A Different Kind of Save the Date

2016-06-21 08:36:13 by Sarah Plant, Patient Family, as posted on the inside.akronchildrens.org blog.

We knew walking into the consultation last week that heart surgery would probably be within the next few weeks; we just didn’t realize how soon it would actually seem once the date was set.

After meeting with Dr. Smith, we met with Charlene. I took one look at her calendar, and I’m pretty sure that she runs the entire world. Dr. Smith and Charlene took a look at the giant calendar covered in a rainbow of sticky notes, and for the first time all day, I started to get a little nervous.

Even though I knew that we were there because surgery would be soon, I really expected them to flip a few more pages of the calendar. When Dr. Smith and Charlene finished looking at the calendar, they suggested March 5. That is soon.

I’ll admit that when I heard the date, I laughed a little, and then explained that when we were in the TLC section of the NICU, Bekah had a roommate who we absolutely love. She is having surgery March 6, and we used to laugh at the chances their surgeries would be scheduled close to one another.

The only problem was that I used to think of her surgery in March as something that was far, far away.

March, I realized, is almost here. We started to schedule a day to come in for pre-procedure work, but Charlene (who I’m telling you really does run the world—at least all that runs efficiently in the world) found a way that we could have everything done right then.

Suddenly, something that had been but a speck in the future looms near…it all feels a bit like returning to reality after a great daydream.  Even though we knew heart surgery was coming and in many ways look forward to it eagerly, I’m pretty sure that these next few days will feel like the longest—and yet shortest—days of our lives with Bekah.
