Fiona with Dr. Patton
On July 23, 2013, Fiona's day started off like any other day. We went for donuts and dropped her and her sister off at day care.
She went outside to play on the playground and while running, she fell and hit her head, bit her tongue, and scraped her nose and knee. All this earned her an ambulance ride to MetroHealth in downtown Cleveland.
She also complained of abdomen pain, so after a CT scan, we were told by the trauma doc that Fiona had a very large tumor on her kidney that looked like it had metastasized into her lungs.
They were telling us that with the size of the tumor and the spots on her lungs that the prognosis was not very good. They began talking about surgery to remove her kidney right away.
They told us that we were going to immediately be sent via LifeFlight to either Akron Children's or the Cleveland Clinic. I called our pediatrician and he said that going to Akron Children's would be the best for Fiona.
Fiona stayed in the PICU for about a week before being given over to the awesome care of the hematology/oncology group.
Over the past 7 months of inpatient and outpatient chemo, Fiona has become quite the Diva on the floor, riding around on one of the floor tri-cycles and giving all the nurses and doctors checkups in her Doc McStuffins outfit.
We can't thank Dr. Donn Patton and her team enough for getting us through this and making our princess better!
