Candy Young and her mother, Delores, are leaving a gift to support Akron Children's Hospital in their wills.
It was an experience 30 years ago that motivated Candy Young and her mother, Delores, to become lifetime supporters of Akron Children’s Hospital.
At the time, Candy was asked to tutor one of her students who was a patient at the hospital. Fifteen years later, Candy received her master’s degree to be a child life specialist and spent more than 600 hours, during 3 consecutive summers, interning at the hospital.
A few years ago, when it came time for Candy and her mother to update their wills, they realized they hadn’t left any money to charity.
“We knew we wanted to leave Children’s in our will,” said Candy.
More specifically, Candy and her mother wanted their money to benefit Akron Children's Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders.
“Having spent time on the cancer floor during my internship, the Camp Ed Bear Fund and Children’s Blood and Cancer (CBC) Fund were specifically close to my heart,” said Candy.
Camp Ed Bear is a week-long summer camp that gives patients who have or are currently undergoing treatment for cancer or blood disorders a chance to experience summer camp. The CBC Fund provides personal items for patients and covers expenses of equipment and supplies.
Leaving Akron Children’s in their wills was so important to Candy and Delores because they know how the money will be used.
“It’s such a good feeling to know that your money will be used for children,” said Candy. “And for such a good place where everyone is so kind.”
