My son, Codey Montecalvo, is in remission from cancer and has decided for the first time to run cross country.

Last month Codey organized a Go4theGoal fundraiser with his Firestone High School cross country team to benefit the Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Akron Children's Hospital, where he was treated 2013-2014.

Go4thGoal raises money by selling special gold laces for $5 each, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Akron Children's cancer program.

And because the Woodridge Local Schools were so incredibly supportive during Codey's illness, we invited the Woodridge Middle and High school teams to join us in the fundraiser. His sister, Angela, who's in the 7th grade at Woodridge Middle School,  also runs cross country.

Together, the Firestone Boys Cross Country team and the Woodridge Boys and Girls Middle and High School Cross Country teams raised $800 for Akron Children's cancer program.

The athletes all wore their gold laces last Tuesday to show their support for the fight against childhood cancer.

Go4theGoalA special thanks goes out to Firestone coach Tim Carroll and Woodridge coaches Jeff Howard, Leah Norris, Rich Ettinger and Katie Arbogast and all of the athletes and parents who helped us surpass our goal.

The Montecalvo family is thrilled to be able to support Akron Children's Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders.
