As an individual, what can you do to help stop diabetes? You can do a lot by instilling good eating habits at home. Get an abundance of nutritional help by joining the Eat Well, America!sm campaign championed by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

During American Diabetes Month, the ADA is working towards its vision of life free from diabetes by raising awareness about the disease. The Eat Well, America! campaign will show you how easy and delightful healthy eating can be for everyone.

Whether your child is one of the 208,000 American children diagnosed with diabetes or not, your entire family will benefit from a healthy diet. The ADA website includes information on meal planning, shopping tips, grocery lists, chef's preparation secrets, delicious recipes and more.

Visit to find tasty, healthy food for your family and friends. Each week during the month, the ADA will share recipes selected by noted chefs and cookbook authors. In addition to regular meals, the cooking experts are offering snacks and treats for special occasions.

And how about Thanksgiving - the day many Americans devote to feasting on rich foods? The ADA also has tips and seasonal recipes that are both healthy and delicious. So don't worry about missing out on your favorite holiday flavors.

November 17 is another special day because it's National Healthy Lunch Day. On this date, the ADA shows you how to "Lunch Right with Every Bite" whether your child's lunch is packed at home or bought at the school cafeteria. Share photos of healthy midday plates on social media using the hash tag #MyHealthyLunch and inspire your friends and families to make their own healthy choices.

American Diabetes Month is a time to focus attention on the issues surrounding diabetes and the many children and their families burdened by the disease. Consider these statistics:

  • Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.

  • Another 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

  • The American Diabetes Association estimates the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $245 billion.

Eating tasty food is one of life's pleasures. Despite a diagnosis of diabetes, your child and the rest of the family can enjoy foods that are delicious and nutritious. This month - and in the months to come - put good health on the table by joining the Eat Well, America! campaign.
