Change Bandit Spotlight: Finally home and helping others

2015-02-05 09:11:16 by Lauren O'Kane, PR Intern, as posted on the inside.akronchildrens.org blog.

Savannah was born prematurely, and spent more than 100 days in the neonatal intensive care unit. After being home for a few months, she was admitted into the pediatric intensive care unit for 4 more months. Now with their little girl home, Savannah’s family wanted to give back, so they signed up to be Change Bandits to raise money for Akron Children's “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” radiothon, which airs Feb. 12-14 on 98.1 WKDD. Sign up to support the radiothon.

Here's her mom's story.

SavannahSavannah was born 3 months premature on July 5, 2013, in Canton.

She weighed a mere 1 lb. 2 oz. and was 11.5 inches in length. She spent the first 109 days of her life in the NICU at Aultman Hospital.

On Oct. 21, she came home on oxygen and an NG feeding tube.

On Jan. 19, 2014, she aspirated, and by the end of the day, she was admitted to the PICU at Akron Children’s for what would be a 120-day stay.

The aspiration episode caused severe damage to her lungs. She underwent a trachostemy on March 5, a central IV placement procedure on March 12, and then the g-tube and nissen surgery on March 18.

She actually still has all of those! We are grateful because it allows us to have our little girl home.

We are forever thankful for her team of doctors and nurses in the PICU. Words can’t describe the thanks a parent has after watching a team of amazing people save your child’s life on several occasions.

We continue to care for our 18-month-old miracle at home with the wisdom and guidance of palliative care, Dr. Omlor, Dr. Lane and Dr. Pittinger and their amazing staff. They all care for Savannah as their own!
