Once upon a bedtime

Ah, bedtime.  I hate to admit it, but I look forward to a little mommy time at the end of all the chaos.  Getting those little boys to go upstairs to get a bath, help them brush their teeth and convince them to wear pajamas can definitely be trying, but one thing I never have to beg them to do is pick out books for bedtime.

This is a time that my husband and I treasure.  Once we are all cozied up, story time begins.  And so do the imaginations of both our boys, ages 3 and 6.  I have so many great memories already, but one that I truly love is from a classic book called “Goodnight Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown.  We have read this at least a hundred times and I never get tired of it.

My favorite two lines are "and a comb and a brush and a bowl full of mush."  My 3 year old, Brody, says they are grits, not mush.  "Because who would eat mush?” he asks me.  Then he tells me he would like to have some grits for breakfast.  Grits it is.

The other favorite is "Goodnight little house, and goodnight mouse."  I have been informed that this little mouse, who is sitting in a shaded circle, is actually a meteor.  Not only am I impressed that he knows the word "meteor," but he insists that I read the story to say "and goodnight mouse in the meteor."

These are the little things that mean so much to me and that I look forward to.  Even our older son, Jake, will still listen to “Goodnight Moon.”  I will be sad when they are too old for this classic, but in the meantime, "Goodnight mouse in the meteor" it is.

These moments are a great reminder of how important it has been to read aloud to them since they were infants.  Their language skills have rapidly developed and their curiosity about the content of books has grown at a fast pace.   It is so rewarding to see that both boys have a great foundation for school readiness, and a love of books.
