Akron Children's nursing education department provides high school students a chance to follow nurses throughout their work day to promote careers in nursing and provide students (starting at age 16 years) with a realistic view of the nursing profession.
Because of an increased number of student requests to shadow a nurse, we have joined forces with Akron General Medical Center and Summa Health System to develop a more uniform program. To ensure the best possible shadow experience and follow-up communications, we coordinate all of our student requests through the prep2practice program sponsored by the Center for Health Affairs.
Shadow a Nurse experiences are available on specific dates throughout the school year. If you're interested in shadowing a nurse, contact your counselor to see if your high school is a prep2practice-participating school. If not already a participating high school, the counselor should contact The Center for Health Affairs at 216-255-3661 to become part of the prep2practice™ network.
Scheduling for a Shadow A Nurse experience is done online through the prep2practice™ network. The participating school counselor will have instructions for the students to go online and schedule a date for their shadowing experience. Should your school choose not to become affiliated with the prep2practice™ program, students may register for a shadow experience on their own. For registration details and for more information, please visit the prep2practice page.
The goal of our program is to encourage careers in nursing by helping students develop a deeper understanding of the nursing profession. A student may witness the nurse making critical decisions, performing procedures such as caring for a wound or inserting an IV, and interacting with patients and their families.
In addition to providing patient care, students may go with a nurse into surgery, attend an inservice on the latest medical equipment, or accompany a patient for a CT scan. Students have a chance to experience it all firsthand.

We rely on your generosity to provide quality medical care to every child who needs us.
