Shadow a Nurse Program

Shadow a Nurse Program

Akron Children's nursing education department provides high school students a chance to follow nurses throughout their work day to promote careers in nursing and provide students (starting at age 16 years) with a realistic view of the nursing profession.

Because of an increased number of student requests to shadow a nurse, we have joined forces with Akron General Medical Center and Summa Health System to develop a more uniform program. To ensure the best possible shadow experience and follow-up communications, our programs are coordinated through the NorthEast Ohio Nursing Initiative (NEONI), a regional program of the Center for Health Affairs. NEONI processes all student requests.

Application Process

Shadow a Nurse experiences are available on specific dates throughout the school year. If you're interested in shadowing a nurse, you must first contact your school counselor. If not already a NEONI-participating high school, the counselor should contact the NEONI project manager at 216-255-3661 to become part of the NEONI network.

Scheduling for a Shadow A Nurse experience is done online through the NEONI network. The participating school counselor will have instructions for the students to go online and schedule a date for their shadowing experience. For more information, visit the Center for Health Affairs Healthcare Career Shadowing page.

The goal of our program is to encourage careers in nursing by helping students develop a deeper understanding of the nursing profession. A student may witness the nurse making critical decisions, performing procedures such as caring for a wound or inserting an IV, and interacting with patients and their families.

In addition to providing patient care, students may go with a nurse into surgery, attend an in-service on the latest medical equipment, or accompany a patient for a CT scan. Students have a chance to experience it all firsthand.
