The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Pediatrics require each pediatric subspecialty fellow to have a Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) to monitor development and ultimately approve the fellow’s written research product as part of verification of board eligibility.
A fellow’s committee consists of 3 faculty members, at least one of whom must be based outside of the fellow’s division. The purpose of the SOC is not to rigorously mentor the fellow, but rather to provide unbiased assessment and feedback regarding the fellow’s progress toward the research requirement over time.
Formal research mentors and program directors are ineligible to serve on the SOC and will work closely with the fellow outside of the oversight committee.
