Akron Children's downtown Akron hospital and Mahoning Valley hospital in Boardman provide respite centers for families to relax and escape during a child's hospital stay.
The Reinberger Family Center at Akron Children’s is located on the second floor of the hospital. Family members can take a nap, get a shower or snack, relax in a quiet area or meet privately with their doctor, family or friends.
The 6,000-square-foot center is staffed and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It includes:
For family members who need a place to stay overnight, the Reinberger Family Center features the Sterling Jewelers Family Area. This part of the center has 5 sleeping rooms with double beds and a sixth room for overflow that has a single bed sleeper sofa. Each sleep room also has a private phone and private bathroom with shower.
Any patient family may use the Reinberger Family Center, but priority for the sleep rooms goes to those who have patients in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units and have traveled the greatest distance. Social workers from these patient care units coordinate those decisions.
Overnight stays are typically for just one night. Those who need long-term sleeping arrangements are referred to the Ronald McDonald House, which is adjacent to the hospital.
If you simply need to take a nap or freshen up, you can use the sleep rooms without a referral from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Toiletries are donated to Akron Children's Hospital and made available to families. The Reinberger Center also stocks diapers, wipes, eye solution and other emergency supplies.
Funded by grants from the Reinberger Foundation and Sterling Jewelers, the center provides a respite from the stress of having a child or other family member in the hospital. To contact the center, call 330-543-2201.
