Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read® is a national program dedicated to fostering the development of early literacy skills among children as a standard part of pediatric primary care. The program has been endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and other organizations whose members recognize the value of treating the "whole child" as part of routine primary care practice. Research shows that a child's experiences early in life are critical to his ability to achieve his potential and become a productive member of society.

Through Reach Out and Read, pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners give the parents or caregivers of children, ages 6 months to 5 years, new, age-appropriate children's books and suggestions on how to help their children develop a love of books and reading.

Akron Children's Reach Out and Read program is available in our Akron Children's Hospital Pediatrics offices throughout northeast Ohio, Locust Pediatric Care Group in Akron, and our pediatric specialties office in Boardman.

To accomplish its goal of putting children on the road to success in school and beyond, Reach Out and Read provides primary care doctors with a standard model to incorporate into their practice. This model has 3 components:

Program Support

Akron Children's Reach Out and Read program is supported entirely by funding from outside sources. Donations provide support to continue the  program at Akron Children's Hospital Pediatrics offices throughout northeast Ohio.

Other support for Akron Children's Reach Out and Read program has come from:

In addition, a number of community organizations have provided support through the donation of gently used books, which are provided, as available, in the waiting rooms of the pediatrician's offices and to siblings of children visiting the doctor for a well visit.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Readers

Volunteer readers are needed in several area Akron Children's Hospital Pediatrics (ACHP) offices, and the Locust Pediatric Care Group office at the hospital, to read to children in the waiting room . This makes the waiting room experience pleasant for children and parents. By reading to children, volunteers model book-sharing techniques for parents and show them by example that reading aloud is an enjoyable experience for the family.

Children who are introduced to books at an early age are better prepared for success in learning.

Book Drives and Donations

Volunteers are also needed to conduct book drives for children's books. The Reach Out and Read program accepts new and gently used children’s books for all ages.

The books are made available to children in the waiting rooms of our Akron Children's Hospital Pediatrics offices, Locust Pediatric Care Group, and Boardman Medical Pavilion office. Children are encouraged to take a book home with them to keep, to help develop a love of reading at an early age.
